Tarzan
   The name of an English foundling, reared in an African jungle by apes, created by Edgar Rice Burroughs in 1912 and used by him as the hero of twenty-four books. ‘Tarzan’ is otherwise John Clayton, Lord Greystoke, but it is as Tarzan that he is known around the world, thanks to the many films which have supplemented the books and made his exploits known. He is a natuial superman, of great physical strength but also very intelligent, able to commune fluently with animals and haltingly with other humans. His ‘Me Tarzan, you Jane’ remark is humorously quoted by many a young man jokingly acting as a heman before his girl-friend. ‘Tarzan’, a name which Burroughs does not seem to have explained, is frequently used as a substitute name to anyone who appears to be making an ostentatious display of physical strength, rescuing damsels in distress, etc. Examples of such usage occur in Geordie, by David Walker and Absolute Beginners, by Colin MacInnes.
